Section I Health and Safety

Part 1 – Course Overview & Customer Relations
This first part of the course covers the course overview, privacy and ethics, customer relations relative to the Restoration Industry. This course provides the basic skills needed to be a restoration professional and deal effectively with customers.

Part 2 – General Safety Overview
This section outlines the four main hazardous classifications. In this, we cover the basics of safety around the worksite as well as introducing you to the four key hazardous classifications; physical hazards, biological hazards, ergonomic hazards and chemical hazards. Once completed, you will have a well-rounded understanding of safety issues related to this industry.

Part 3 – Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)
Understanding when to use PPE is an important part of safety training. We will guide you through the basics of PPE use and the issues surrounding it. We will also examine the company’s responsibility to provide certain equipment together with an employee’s responsibilities. We will also discuss hardhats, footgear, safety gloves, hearing, respiratory, eye and face-shield protectors and the wearing of safety vests. Starting with the right safety gear and an understanding of how to use it will get you in the habit of thinking - safety first!

Part 4 – Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI)
We will explain MSI and provide tips on avoiding long lasting injuries. Also covered are injury symptoms, lower back stress, lifting principals, and slip, trip and fall accidents.  As well, simple exercises and pre-work warm-ups are presented as a way to prevent injuries.  Understanding these basic principals could be the difference between avoiding minor injuries or injuries all together. 

Part 5 – Workplace Hazardous Material Information System (WHMIS) Basics
Understanding basic WHMIS is a very important part of safety training. In this course we provide a general overview of WHMIS: the classifications; symbols and their meaning; Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS); supplier labels and workplace labels. 
Note: This course is not a standalone WHMIS course only a basic introduction to the subject - A complete WHMIS course is offered by Canadian Restoration Education separately.

Part 6 – Airborne Hazards
Another crucial part of safety is the protection of your respiratory system. In this course, you are introduced to the many airborne hazards experienced in restoration work, such as those from moulds and asbestos dust.  We explain how to identify these before they become a hazard to health and ways to prevent allergic reactions or long term injuries.

Part 1 – Confined Spaces
Confined spaces hazards training is a must.  In this part, we identify confined spaces and their unique characteristics in order to prepare properly for the safeguards that must be taken before entering a hazardous area.
Note: This course is not a standalone Confined Spaces course, only a basic introduction to the subject - A complete Confined Spaces course is offered by Canadian Restoration Education separately.

Part 2 – Ladder Safety
Ladder safety is generally taken for granted but it is a constant source of serious injuries on the job site. In this, we will cover: the setting up of ladders; provide basic safety tips; identify the many types of ladders and their uses; introduce the three point contact system; stability and working on level surface issues; electrical safety issues; and touch on instances when the use of a ladder is not advised.

Part 3 – Fall Safety
Identifying fall safety hazards is important. In this section we:  identify some of the more common fall safety hazards;  demonstrate how to set up guardrail systems; show when to use hole covers and slide guards; introduce the topic of fall arrest systems (FAS); and discuss basic safety issues when putting a tarp on a roof.

Section  III Health and Safety

Part 1 – Flooding Safety
There are many safety issues when working around water and especially flood water. We introduce the main categories of floodwater and the risks/characteristics associated with each: clear water; brown water; and black water. There is also a section on the effects of cold water and precautions to be taken when working in this kind of environment.

Part 2 – Hazardous Spills
Hazardous spills are a reality in restoration work. In this part, we identify chemical hazards, fuel hazards, and biohazards. We also provide instruction on the safety precautions to be taken and personal hygiene habits along with topics surrounding PPE.

Part 3 – Electrical Safety
Electrical safety begins with understanding the dangers of electricity and precautions to take. In this, we cover the basic topics of: electrical hazards; safety issues when working around power lines; underground wiring; electrical grounding systems; controlling electricity in buildings; effects of electricity on the body; facts about electricity; static electricity; early warning signs of electrical hazards, hazard controls – lockout/tag out procedures; temporary controls; safety issues around downed power lines; what to do when encountering someone who has experienced an electrical accident.

Tool safety is an important topic.  In this section, we discuss:  PPE; tool inspections; tool hazards; safety tips when using tools; identify unsafe tools; when to ensure safe guards are used; precautions to be taken when using compressed air; utility knives and their safe use; pry bars and crowbars and their safe use. Also covered are: safe practises involved with the removal of mouldings, trim and baseboards; when to reuse or use mouldings for patterns; labelling materials for reuse; MSI’s when using pry bars and crowbars – identifying symptoms; using claw hammers and scrapers for restoration; identifying the types of screw drivers used in restoration and how to make a chalk line.
